New Budget "Deal" Makes $60 Million Payoff To Teacher Union Chiefs
Right to Work Foundation offers legal assistance to 100,000 new teachers

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (October 21) – The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation announced today that it will offer free legal assistance to the 100,000 new teachers the just passed Congressional budget has sold into compulsory unionism.

The Congressional budget "deal" brokered by Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich left all government-granted compulsory unionism privileges completely intact.

The Foundation will help the new teachers protect their rights from being forced to support teacher unions' radical political agendas through mandatory forced dues.

In addition to countless union privileges enshrined into federal law, in 43 states teachers are forced to accept union "representation" whether they want it or not, and in 20 states teachers are forced to pay union dues or forfeit their jobs. Since average dues are about $600 per teacher per year, teacher union officials can expect to rake in up to $60 million in additional dues money per year.

However, in the Foundation-won Supreme Court case Abood v. Detroit Board of Education the Court ruled that compulsory dues withheld for political activities violated teachers' First Amendment rights. The Court ruled that no teacher could be forced to pay for any activities beyond the costs of collective bargaining. Nevertheless, teacher unions, such as the National Education Association, continue to strip millions of dollars from teachers who are unaware of their right to object.

"This assistance is being offered to help ensure that these new teachers are not forced to fund teacher unions' radical political activities," said Stefan Gleason, Director of Legal Information for the Foundation.

The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization providing free legal aid to employees whose human or civil rights have been violated by compulsory unionism abuses. The Foundation, which can be contacted toll-free at 1-800-336-3600, is assisting thousands of employees in over 400 cases nationwide.
