(CNS) – The head of the New Hampshire Republican Party is giving Vice President Al Gore a chilly reception as he campaigns in the state, saying it's inappropriate for Gore to be on the stump while American troops are fighting in the Balkans.

New Hampshire GOP Chairman Steve Duprey Friday accused Gore of "putting politics over policy as he visits New Hampshire to campaign while our young men and women are engaged in war over the skies of Kosovo."

Duprey drew a sharp distinction between Gore's presidential campaign activities and those of Republicans seeking their own party's nomination, saying that Gore has been presented by the administration as one of those playing a strategic role in the U.S. involvement with the NATO strikes against Yugoslavia.

"Bill Clinton said Al Gore was part of the decision making team," Duprey told CNS. "If he's part of the team, he should be monitoring the action, not campaigning in New Hampshire."

Gore's schedule included a campaign stop in Carroll County, New Hampshire Friday night, which Duprey called "a disgrace."

Noting that Clinton had cancelled a number of high dollar fundraising events shortly after the U.S. action in Yugoslavia began, Duprey asked "If the president has sense enough to cancel his fundraising trips, why should Al Gore be in New Hampshire campaigning?"
