(CNS) – University of Texas President Larry Faulkner wants to reopen the school's tower observation deck, which has been closed ever since it was the site of the worst mass murder shootings in U.S. history. Sniper Charles Whitman opened fire from the outdoor deck 28 stories above the ground on August 1, 1966, killing 16 people and wounding 31 others before he was shot and killed by law enforcement officials. Faulkner said the tower also symbolizes academic achievement, which he insists is the reason it should be opened to the public.
